Homemade Texas Toast (2024)

In my opinion, nothing beats buttery, garlicky golden brown Texas toast, even a classic crusty baguette garlic bread. Texas toast is my top choice every single time because that double-sided butter garlic bliss, my friends, is where it’s at. Yes, you butter both sides of the bread!

So, of course, I needed to make my own homemade garlic bread using Texas sandwich bread and my homemade garlic butter. There is no reason to buy the frozen stuff at the grocery store when it’s straightforward to make!

Texas Toast

Texas toast is a double-thick slice of bread that is first slathered with garlic butter. It is traditionally grilled on a hot grill (a Texas BBQ cooking creation) and flipped over to toast both sides evenly to buttery, golden-brown perfection.

You can buy a sliced, square-baked loaf of bread called Texas toast bread, which also works for this recipe. I prefer the smaller, thick-sliced, rounded-top loaves in my photos, but the choice is up to you!

How to Make Texas Toast

I never grill my Texas toast; I bake mine in the oven, just like the frozen ones you buy. However, once you try this method, I doubt you will ever make garlic bread again. If asked, this is my family’s first choice every time.

  • Get out a large baking sheet and preheat your oven.
  • Combine the butter, garlic, and parsley. If desired, you can make my homemade garlic butter recipe with some additional ingredients that make this unique!
  • Slather a thick layer onto each side of the bread, then lay it on a baking sheet.
  • Bake in the oven until both sides are browned and crispy.
  • Serve and enjoy.

Grilling Texas Toast

You can absolutely grill up this Texas toast like it’s traditionally made! Simply put it on the grill and toast it until each side is browned and crispy. I find it’s actually better made in the oven as it cooks in a pool of melted garlic butter while browning and the results are even better than those of a grill. Look at that even browning and crispy edges; achieving that on a grill is hard.

Main Dishes to go with Texas Toast

Of course, you need Texas toast with beef lasagna but you can also try it with my shrimp alfredo, spaghetti pie, or my cheese chicken spaghetti!

It goes with any pasta, but hey, try it alongside a homemade Caesar salad or grilled salmon just like the restaurants serve!

This recipe is great to have on hand lately, with groceries not always in stock. Mike and I have really been making almost everything we can at home that we usually buy, and even when supplies aren’t affected anymore we are going to keep making homemade Texas toast instead of ordering the frozen stuff, it’s a keeper!

Happy cooking!

Love,

Karlynn

Ingredients

  • 8 slices Texas sandwich bread
  • 1/2 cup salted butter melted
  • 2 tablespoons garlic puree
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F.

  • In a small bowl, combine the butter, the garlic puree and the dried parsley.

  • Taking a pastry brush, coat both sides of the bread slices with the butter garlic mixture and place on a large baking sheet.

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes, checking the bottom of the toast slices every few minutes. When the bottom of the slice is browned nicely, flip it over and then brown the other side.

  • Remove once both sides of the toast are golden brown,

  • Serve immediately.
